Exciting things are happening with Amicitia and Independent Living Ireland. We are delighted to announce that our team has moved to a new location on Old Church Street in Athenry, our old office in Athlone served us well, and we made great memories there, but we couldn’t be more excited about our new space.
Our social hub will help us we expand our services beyond the technology supports provided by ILI and allow us to design our services around the needs the communities we work with. We will continue to offer the same friendly service at our new address and expand ILI’s product line to offer more products and services.
Over the past few weeks, we have been working closely with Employ Ability and we hope that this relationship will lead to meaningful training and employment for people with disabilities throughout the country.
Galway 2020 bid
Our social hub will allow us to support different types of community events throughout the year and you might be aware that Galway was bidding to become The European Capital of Culture 2020. The European Capital of Culture is an initiative of the European Union and has been running since 1985. On Friday the 15th of July, Galway was named European Capital of Culture 2020 along with Rijeka in Croatia. The 2020 winning cities, will take the title for a year and receive a prize of €1.5 million.
So as you can imagine there was loads of excitement around Athenry because it was chosen as one of three the ‘Small Towns, Big Ideas’ areas. We were delighted to share our social hub and act as the information resource advertising the different events and activities going on around the town. We enjoyed the music and company of the people running the project as well as chatting to the locals who have been popping in for advice and a friendly chat before our big opening on the 30th of September.
The centre will be open for business during the day and to the community in the evenings and weekends. Upcoming events include:
- Computer classes for the elderly
- Community garden
- Local market
- Tea mornings for dementia
- Fundraising events
If our readers have any suggestions or workshops they would like us to host feel free to pop in and say hello or contact us directly.
